The harsh summer sun can be tiring on plants too. Extra love and care are essential for all plants during the hot months. Watering them daily or sometimes more than once a day is the best and easiest care you can provide for your plants.
Here are a few things you can do to ensure that your garden thrives in the summer:
Water – Ensure your plants have plenty of water, check for soil dryness and try to keep the soil damp at all times. Choose early morning or evenings to water your plants. You can consider setting up an irrigation system for plants that are open to the sun.
Weeding – With pollination having taken place in spring, the results will start blooming in summer and while you are less likely to be surprised by a flower bloom that you never planted, you will definitely see weeds. Weeds grow rapidly in summer and it is important to remove them as they compete for water and nutrients with other plants. Weeds can be quite deep-rooted and tough to remove but try and be watchful and remove them at the earliest.
Disease check – Plants are likely to get a variety of diseases and also suffer insect damage during the summer months. Examine your plants carefully to ensure and use appropriate medicine to get rid of any disease it might have.
Mildew – If you do not clean the space around your pots and spill a lot of water while watering, you are likely to end up with mildew around your pots. This mildew can spread to the plants and the soil, so it is best to ensure that you maintain the area around your pots.
Dead heading – Remember to remove dried leaves and buds off the plants. Dead heading allows the plants to better utilize nutrients and water from the soil as dead or dying leaves and buds put a strain on the resources while trying to revive.
Watch for heat waves – Make a note of heat waves and ensure that plants get extra care during those times. It would be a bad idea to fertilize, use pesticide or re-pot a plant during a heat wave as it would most likely kill your plant.
Add a bit of shade – If its possible try and shade your plants during the peak hours of heat. You can use netted covers or shades to ensure that the sun does not directly attack your plants in peak summer.
Spring and summer bring in your brightest blooms of the season and a sense of lushness to your garden. With some extra care, these blooms can brighten your summer days.
