Start Your Balcony Garden

Balconies are essentially small open spaces that can truly catch the eye if done right. So, if you are craving to exercise your green thumb then here is how you can elevate your balcony with its own garden.

Is your balcony ready to become a garden?

Firstly, check if there is any reason why you cannot add plants to your balcony. How much space do you have? Is it sturdy enough to take the weight of several pots of plants or do you need to use lighter planting options? Do you have a water outlet or need to carry water in to water the plants? Is there a drain for excess water or rainwater to flow out? Once this basic recce is done, we can now move on to the actual gardening part.

What is the purpose of your garden?

Are you creating a garden to sit and relax in or just for décor or to grow vegetables? If it is just for creating a vibrant space, then you can include more flowers and  large foliage plants. If you want to relax in your balcony, then you need to factor in space for seating. Once you know how you want to utilize your balcony, it’s easy to plan.

How to select the right plants?

You must first consider the amount of sunlight your balcony receives and at what time during the day. A balcony that primarily receives direct sunlight only in the morning hours and is shaded for the rest of the day is good for most varieties of plants. One that has direct heat for most of the day needs to have plants that are hardier. There are plenty of plant options for low light conditions too, so don’t be afraid to get stared.

How to decorate your balcony?

Whether you wish to relax by yourself, entertain or occasionally work in your balcony, you can make your space attractive and comfortable by adding elements such as seating, lighting and décor.
